The intensifying effects of climate change are disrupting supply chains and logistics operations worldwide, introducing uncertainties, risks, and challenges that affect the stability and resilience of industries. This thematic section aims to advance knowledge by addressing how climate-related factors – such as extreme weather events, rising temperatures, floods, droughts, and sea-level rise – impact logistics networks, transportation systems, production processes, and inventory management.

The increasing frequency and severity of climate-related events necessitate new approaches to supply chain management. This thematic section will provide a platform for disseminating research that not only addresses the challenges posed by climate change but also explores innovations and strategies for building resilient and sustainable supply chains. Additionally, the role of humanitarian logistics in mitigating the impacts of climate-induced disasters is becoming increasingly crucial. Effective humanitarian logistics can ensure the timely delivery of aid and essential supplies to vulnerable populations, highlighting the need for coordination, innovation, and adaptive strategies. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Operations, Manufacturing, Industrial, and Production Engineering, this section aligns with the journal’s commitment to fostering research that addresses critical societal challenges and advances the field.

The objectives of this thematic section are:

  1. To identify and analyze the vulnerabilities of supply chains to climate-induced disruptions.
  2. To explore adaptive strategies and innovative solutions for enhancing supply chain resilience in the face of climate variability.
  3. To evaluate the role of sustainability, circular economy, decarbonization, and green logistics practices in mitigating climate change impacts.
  4. To discuss policy frameworks, risk management, and technological advances that support climate-resilient supply chains.
  5. To examine the implications of climate change on global supply chain networks, particularly in developing economies.
  6. To investigate the role of humanitarian logistics in responding to climate-induced disasters and ensuring the timely delivery of aid and essential goods.

We invite submissions that provide empirical evidence, case studies, theoretical frameworks, simulation models, and methodological approaches addressing these key areas.

The Guest Editors and the Editor-in-chief of the Production journal invite researchers to submit research papers with a strong scientific background and practical relevance. The manuscripts should be based on clear and relevant motivation, research goals, and research methodology to offer a significant contribution to the literature. Empirical studies supported by appropriate theoretical or conceptual frameworks with original data and relevant findings are very welcome.

About the Journal

The Production journal (formerly, Produção or Producao) is the flagship journal of ABEPRO - Brazilian  Association of Production Engineering. Established in 1990, the journal (ISSN 0103-6513) serves as a key platform for disseminating academic research in Production Engineering and Operations Management.

Its mission is to provide an internationally respected channel for publishing original and relevant research in Operations, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, and Production Engineering and Management. The journal is dedicated to fostering advancements and knowledge exchange in these critical areas of study and practice.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Climate Change and Supply Chain Resilience:
    • Identification and assessment of climate-related risks in supply chains.
    • Resilience frameworks and adaptive strategies for supply chain management.

    • The role of digital technologies (AI, IoT, blockchain) in managing climate-related disruptions.

    • Policy frameworks supporting climate-adaptive supply chain practices.
    • International collaboration and regulatory responses to climate-induced supply chain challenges.
  5. Impact on Global and Local Supply Chains:
    • Case studies from specific industries (agriculture, manufacturing, retail etc.).
    • Impacts on global supply networks, particularly on emerging economies.
  6. Climate Change and Circular Economy
    • The synergy between the circular economy practices and decarbonization of supply chains.
    • Integration of circular economy strategies to enhance the resilience of supply chains to climate-induced disruptions.
  7. Humanitarian Logistics:
    • Strategies for delivering aid and essential goods during climate-related disasters.
    • The role of humanitarian supply chains in responding to extreme weather events and other climate-induced crises.
    • Coordination and collaboration between humanitarian organizations and governments in climate disaster responses.
    • Innovative practices for ensuring the resilience of humanitarian logistics in vulnerable regions.
