Integrating UTAUT and TPB to explain sustainability adoption in Indonesian construction firms

Abstract

Paper aims: This study develops a comprehensive theoretical framework and provides empirical evidence on the determinants influencing sustainability behaviors among Indonesian construction firms.

Originality: This study addresses a critical research gap by integrating two major theories to explain organizational-level adoption of sustainability in the construction industry. By extending these theories with context-specific factors, the study provides a novel, locally relevant model.

Research method: Data were collected via a self-administered cross-sectional survey employing purposive sampling. Of the 164 firms invited, 76 valid responses were obtained (46.3% response rate). The proposed model was tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).

Main findings: multiple pathways to the adoption of sustainability in the Indonesian construction industry are observed. Notably, facilitating conditions are related to behavior, underscoring the critical role of institutional support in translating intention into practice.

Implications for theory and practice: This study broadens behavior theory beyond individual decision-making. This study reconfigures the TPB/UTAUT frameworks to explain organizational-level sustainability adoption by incorporating institutional pressures through a regulatory framework and introducing sustainability awareness as a context-specific antecedent. The results also suggest that effective policies, increased awareness, leadership commitment, and supportive infrastructure are essential for translating sustainability intentions into real action.
